Big Rig to cause temporary closing of
major roads October 1- October 3.
part a six-year project to retirbish and to
increase the generating capacity of its Bath County
Pumped Storage Station, Dominion will need on
several d. ifferent occasions to block or slow traffic on
major portions of U.S. 220 from Low Moor to Warm
Springs, U.S. 39 from Warm Springs to Mountain
Grove and Virginia Route 600 from its intersection
with U.S. 39 to the power station.
We are sorry for the inconvenience we know this
will cause. Your patience will help us complete a
project that will mean more tax revenues for Bath
County, new jobs for the local area and more reliable
electricity to meet the growing needs of Virginia.
Dominicm and its partner in the Bath County Pumped
Storage Station, Allegheny Energy, are refurbishing and
up-rating the gigantic turbines that produce electricity
at the station. The project will take six years to
complete, with one turbine being done each year.
Because of improvements in design, the new turbines
will Increase the output of each unit by about 8 per-
cent, from 386 megawatts to about 415 megawatts.
The cost of the project is about $90 million.
In order to move the giant turbines, which weigh
195,000 pounds each and are 21 feet in diameter,
Dominion will have to use a specially designed
tractor-trailer rig that wilt be about 220 feet in length.
Use of this vehicle will require the closing of portions
of Route 600, U.S. 39 and U.S. 220 at various times
during the move.
Each turbine replacement will require five trips by the
huge transport rig. The moves wil( take about 10
hours each.
Dominion - in conjunction with the Virginia
Department of.Transportation, the Virginia Highway
Patrol, the Covington Police Department and the
Alleghany and Bath County Sheriff's Departments -
will move the first turbine on Wednesday, October 1,
through Friday, October 3.
